Loss on time: 1233-1224

Today's game was a frustrating loss on time where I failed to identify attacking opportunities and made numerous moves purely for the sake of stopping the clock. My rating before the game was 1233, an all-time high after gaining a point the previous day from a drawn endgame against a higher-rated opponent.

White opened with e4 and Bc4, and I transposed into the French from e6 and c5. The engine indicates d5 would have been a better second move, but I sometimes prefer c5 when White's second move isn't d4. As shown below, after move 7 I had three pieces developed, superior control of the center, and a king ready to castle short. My opponent, meanwhile, had only a quasi-fianchettoed bishop to show for his trouble.

It was not until move 19 that White castled -- long -- and during that time I failed to exploit the open e-file, despite having a rook on e8 as of move 10. I missed a complicated tactic on move 12 the engine says would have won me White's a1 rook, but even at peak performance I wouldn't have found it. What I should have been more alert to was White's blunder on move 17:

Move 17

With three pieces attacking White's knight on e5 and only two pawns defending it, one of which was pinned to the bishop on e3 by my queen, I should have calculated that capturing the knight would have swung the game in my favor both materially and positionally.

Move 24 was when I went from being ahead in the game to a decidedly inferior position. My pieces were badly uncoordinated, White's pawns restricted my movement on the queenside where most of my forces were languishing, and worst of all I had no ideas for how to move forward. On move 30 I allowed White's bishop to fork my rooks, and I was down to 1:10 on the clock while my opponent still had 5:40.

On move 38 I had one final opportunity to try and claw back into the game with a potential checkmate maneuver involving my bishop and queen. It was straightforward enough that I should have found it, but with 17 seconds on the clock it too eluded me.

My time finally expired on move 41, and my rating fell 9 points to 1224.
